Partner Spotlight: Qouign Pastries & the Art of Hand-Painted Chocolate
If you’re wandering through the Carmel or Del Monte Farmers Markets and see a crowd hovering over what looks like a jewelry display, you’ve probably found Qouign (pronounced “queen.”)
The force behind the brand is Santana Rodriguez, a Soledad native and resilient "pastry queen" who sharpened her skills in legendary kitchens like Bernardus Lodge and Thomas Keller’s Bouchon before striking out on her own.
I’ll be honest: calling their work "candy" feels a little like calling a Ferrari "just a car." It’s technically true, but it misses the soul of the thing. At Qouign, they’re practicing a kind of edible alchemy, specifically with their hand-painted chocolates, that makes you rethink every grocery store truffle you’ve ever settled for!
Unlike a traditional brick-and-mortar bakery, Qouign is a bit of a moving target. They don't have a permanent storefront. Instead, they’ve embraced the small-batch, pop-up life. You have to catch them at the Carmel Farmer’s Market on Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm or the Del Monte Market on Fridays between 8 am and 12 pm.
Most of us are used to the uniform, brown squares found in heart-shaped boxes. Qouign clearly skipped that memo! Their bonbons look more like polished gemstones or miniature galaxies than food. Each one is hand-painted with vibrant splatters and pearlescent swirls that make you hesitate before taking a bite. You almost feel bad eating it… Almost!
It appears the secret isn't just the shelf appeal, though. There’s a subtle science to getting that perfect snap when you bite into a shell, only to have it give way to a ganache that tastes like actual ingredients instead of synthetic, lab-grown essences.
In a world of mass production, Qouign feels like a quiet, delicious rebellion! Their flavors move with the seasons. You might find a bright, sharp passion fruit one week or a deep, moody Earl Grey the next.
There’s a nuance to their sweetness, too. They don’t just hit you over the head with sugar; they lean into the bitterness of the cacao and the floral or nutty notes of the fillings. It’s a more grown-up way to indulge.
If you're looking to track them down, check out their Instagram page @qouignpastries. Just don't blame me when you can never go back to "normal" chocolate again!
Receive a sample Qouign’s treats in one of our foodie totes! If you can’t make it out to the markets or join us for a full afternoon of walking, you can still get a curated taste of the coast. We’ve put together Monterey Bay Food Totes, which are essentially a "greatest hits" collection of the region's best makers.
